Boy, does this moon colony have an alarming amount of wall-mounted spikes. In a game full of spongey baddies, this weapon lets you pick most of them up and toss them off platforms and into chasms, or more frequently, into wall-mounted spikes. The GRP is The Callisto Protocol's answer to Control's levitate, or Half-Life 2's gravity gun, and it's great fun. Lee has a glowing green bar on the back of his head that indicates his health, and a blue one that indicates whether his "GRP" has overheated. When it comes to the actual bludgeoning though, it's satisfyingly vicious, especially when broken up with point-blank shotgun rounds. Perhaps I'm just bad at it, but in the heat of the moment-and especially when coping with more than one enemy-I often resorted to panic-shooting. So really, it extends the experience for those people that really kind are those hunter gatherers that want to collect everything.The Callisto Protocol takes a rhythmic approach to hand-to-hand combat, but playing with a controller, over the course of 15 hours I never felt like I could effectively nail the timing of that ostensibly simple evasion system.
Steve Papoutsis told me that the purpose of the dungeons is to “create a deeper experience for people.” The traditional gameplay is still there, but now players are “able to go and explore off the beaten track and actually have areas like this that will provide extra opportunities for loot, more backstory, more logs, and things like that. There were ships and debris all over the place, and you’ll be able to traverse the environment through Zero G exploration.ĭungeons will typically average from 30 to 60 minutes in length, and will be filled with items, ammo, treasures, additional story content, and of course, plenty of monstrous Necromorphs. The demo was restricted within the spaceship, but we were able to get a quick peek at the surrounding space.
This optional section is set aboard a spaceship within a ship graveyard above the ice planet Tau Volantis. The particular dungeon I went through was called the Lost Flotilla, and takes place in the first act of Dead Space 3.
